Diabetics are on a Two-Fold Rise in Several States

A recent survey conducted by the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) showed a doubled number of diabetic patients in the state of Gujarat between 2019 and 2021. As per the data, the rate of high and very high blood glucose levels were 14.8% and 16.1% among women and men respectively.

Among the other major states, Gujarat is ranked fourth and fifth for the total women and men diabetic population respectively.  Kerala is the leading state with a maximum diabetic population (21.4%) followed by Tamil Nadu (18.6%), and Andhra Pradesh (17.4%). Dr. Tiven Marwah, an endocrinologist state that apart from a sweet tooth, diabetes is a lifestyle disorder with the risk factors increased by reduced physical activity, stress, hormonal imbalance, etc.

The report also shed light on the growing hypertension-affected population among men and women in Gujarat. 20.5% and 20.3% were the numbers of women and men affected according to the survey with the obesity percentages stagnant at 22.7% for women and 20% for men as per the last survey.
